This hearty Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is the definition of comfort food. Juicy hamburger patties are seasoned and pan-seared for maximum flavor, then baked in a rich, savory gravy. It’s a one-pan classic that pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes or egg noodles, making it a perfect weeknight family dinner.

For the Gravy

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 2: Make the Hamburger Patties
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently until just combined—avoid overmixing. Shape the mixture into 4–5 oval-shaped patties.

Step 3: Brown the Patties
Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 2–3 minutes per side, until nicely browned. Once browned, place them into a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Step 4: Prepare the Gravy
Using the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly, to make a roux. Slowly whisk in the beef broth, making sure the mixture stays smooth. Add Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 3–4 minutes, or until thickened.

Step 5: Bake the Dish
Pour the prepared gravy over the hamburger steaks in the baking dish. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30–35 minutes, until the patties are cooked through and tender.

Step 6: Serve
Serve hot, with plenty of that rich gravy ladled over each hamburger steak. Ideal with mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, or your favorite veggie side.
