Homestyle Amish Poor Man’s Steak

Craving a warm, comforting dinner that tastes like it came straight out of Grandma’s oven? This Homestyle Amish Poor Man’s Steak delivers just that. With seasoned ground beef patties smothered in a creamy mushroom gravy, it’s a humble, budget-friendly take on classic Salisbury steak that hits all the right notes.

Rooted in the simplicity of Amish cooking, this dish turns basic ingredients into a satisfying baked meal that’s tender, flavorful, and perfect for family dinners or meal prepping ahead of a busy week.

🧾 Ingredients

For the Patties

  • Ground beef – 2 lbs
  • Crushed saltine crackers – 1½ cups (about 1 sleeve)
  • Whole milk – 1 cup
  • Italian seasoning – ½ tsp
  • Garlic powder – ½ tsp
  • Onion powder – ½ tsp
  • Cayenne pepper – ¼ tsp
  • Kosher salt & black pepper – To taste
  • All-purpose flour – For dredging

For the Gravy

  • Condensed cream of mushroom soup – 2 cans (10.75 oz each)
  • Whole milk – 1½ cups
  • Fresh parsley (chopped) – 1½ tbsp

👨‍🍳 Directions

🔹 Step 1: Get the Oven Ready
Preheat oven to 350ºF (175ºC).
Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

🔹 Step 2: Whip Up the Gravy
In a bowl, combine mushroom soup with milk until smooth.
Stir in chopped parsley and set aside.

🔹 Step 3: Mix & Form Patties
In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, crushed crackers, milk, and seasonings until just combined.
Shape into patties, roughly equal in size.

🔹 Step 4: Dredge & Sear
Coat patties lightly in flour.
Sear in a hot skillet with a little oil until browned on both sides—just enough to lock in flavor.

🔹 Step 5: Bake to Perfection
Arrange patties in the prepared dish.
Pour gravy over the top.
Cover with foil and bake for 30–40 minutes until patties are tender and fully cooked.

🍽️ To Serve
Serve over creamy mashed potatoes, buttery noodles, or soft white rice. Top with fresh parsley for a pop of color.

💡 Tips & Variations

  • Make ahead: Freeze raw patties and gravy separately for easy dinners later.
  • Add-ins: Try adding sautéed mushrooms or caramelized onions to the gravy.
  • Complete the meal: Pair with roasted vegetables, a green salad, or dinner rolls.
