Cabbage Beef Bake

Cabbage Beef Bake
This hearty, one-pan casserole brings all the flavors of classic cabbage rolls—without the rolling. Tender cabbage, seasoned ground beef, and a rich, cheesy tomato sauce bake together for a comforting and satisfying meal that’s perfect for busy weeknights.
Ingredients:
| Ingredient | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Small cabbage, shredded | 1 |
| Ground beef or turkey | 1 ½ lbs |
| Large onion, chopped | 1 |
| Red bell pepper, chopped | ½ cup |
| Diced tomatoes (with juices) | 1 (15 oz) can |
| Salt | ½ teaspoon |
| Black pepper | ¼ teaspoon |
| Sugar | ¼ teaspoon |
| Caraway seeds (optional) | 1 teaspoon |
| Tomato sauce | 1 (8 oz) can |
| Reduced-fat sour cream | 1 cup |
| Shredded Swiss cheese (or your favorite cheese) | 1 cup |
Instructions:
1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Dish
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.
2. Layer the Cabbage
Spread the shredded cabbage evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
3. Cook the Beef Mixture
In a large skillet, brown the ground beef or turkey with the chopped onion and red bell pepper over medium heat. Once cooked, drain off any excess fat. Stir in the diced tomatoes (with their juices), salt, pepper, sugar, and optional caraway seeds. Mix until well combined.
4. Assemble the Bake
Spoon the beef and tomato mixture over the layer of cabbage. In a small bowl, stir together the tomato sauce and sour cream until smooth, then spread this mixture evenly over the beef layer.
5. Bake the Casserole
Cover the dish with foil and bake for 1 hour. After that, remove the foil, sprinkle the shredded Swiss cheese evenly on top, and return to the oven for another 15–20 minutes, until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly.
6. Rest and Serve
Allow the casserole to sit for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
