Garbage Bread

Ingredients

  • Ground beef – 1 pound
  • Onion, diced – ½ cup
  • Salt – ¼ teaspoon
  • Black pepper – ¼ teaspoon
  • Refrigerated French bread dough – 1 tube (11 oz)
  • Ketchup – ⅓ cup
  • Mustard – 3 tablespoons
  • Cooked bacon, crumbled – 6 slices (or bacon pieces)
  • Dill pickle spears, chopped – 2
  • American cheese slices – 8
  • Large egg, beaten – 1
  • Sesame seeds – 1 tablespoon
  • Thousand Island dressing – for dipping

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

Step 2: Brown the Beef
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef with the diced onion until fully browned. Season with salt and pepper, then drain off any excess fat.

Step 3: Roll Out the Dough
Lightly flour your work surface and roll the French bread dough into a rectangle approximately 12×18 inches.

Step 4: Spread the Sauces
Evenly spread the ketchup and mustard over the dough, leaving about a ½-inch border around the edges.

Step 5: Add the Fillings
Scatter the cooked beef mixture over the dough, followed by the crumbled bacon and chopped pickles.

Step 6: Add the Cheese
Lay the American cheese slices evenly across the fillings.

Step 7: Roll and Seal
Starting from one long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Pinch the seams closed and place seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.

Step 8: Brush and Bake
Brush the top of the dough with the beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown.

Step 9: Rest and Serve
Allow the bread to cool for at least 5 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with Thousand Island dressing on the side for dipping.
