In a truly amazing medical success story, conjoined twin sisters were successfully separated by doctors after a complex and risky operation. This remarkable procedure has completely changed their lives, and you will be amazed by what they look like now.
When Nima and Dawa were born, doctors were unsure if they would have a long life. They were conjoined at the chest and abdomen. In 2018, when they were only 14 months old, they traveled from Bhutan to Melbourne for a life-saving procedure at the Royal Children’s Hospital.
Conjoined twins are children whose bodies are physically joined and can’t always be separated, especially if they share limbs or organs. But after a difficult and dangerous six-hour operation, Nima and Dawa were successfully separated.
Now, at seven years old, they are completely different children. Their mother, Bhumchu Zangmo, says they are healthy and in the second grade in Bhutan. “They are already very independent and are growing very well,” she says.
Nima and Dawa have their own unique ways of learning, playing, laughing, and exploring the world. Their mother also shared that “the little pleasures are significant to them.” This year, instead of their usual birthday party with friends and cake, they chose to celebrate in a different way. They visited a local temple and fed the elderly.
