Hearty Cabbage Rolls

Hearty and comforting, these classic stuffed cabbage rolls are ideal for family meals. Tender cabbage leaves are wrapped around a flavorful mixture of ground meat and rice, then gently simmered in a rich tomato sauce until perfectly soft and satisfying.
Stuffed Cabbage Rolls
Ingredients
For the Cabbage
- 1 large head of cabbage
For the Filling
- 1 lb ground beef
- ½ lb ground pork (optional)
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp paprika
For the Sauce
- 2 cups tomato sauce
- 1 cup beef broth
- 2 tbsp olive oil
Instructions
1. Prepare the Cabbage
- Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil.
- Cut out the core of the cabbage and carefully lower the whole head into the water.
- Blanch for 2–3 minutes, then gently peel away the softened leaves and set them aside to cool.
2. Prepare the Filling
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork (if using), cooked rice, onion, garlic, egg, salt, pepper, and paprika.
- Mix until well combined.
3. Roll the Cabbage
- Place a portion of the filling in the center of each cabbage leaf.
- Fold the sides inward and roll tightly, securing the filling inside.
4. Make the Sauce
- Heat olive oil in a large pot or deep skillet over medium heat.
- Add the tomato sauce and beef broth, stirring to combine.
- Bring to a gentle simmer.
5. Cook the Rolls
- Place the cabbage rolls seam-side down into the simmering sauce.
- Cover and cook on low heat for 45–60 minutes, until the cabbage is tender and the filling is fully cooked.
6. Serve
- Serve hot, spooning plenty of sauce over the rolls for a comforting, satisfying meal.
