When it comes to comfort food, few dishes compare to the indulgent pleasure of potato-and-cheese balls nestled in a rich tomato sauce. With creamy mashed potatoes, gooey cheddar, and a flavorful tomato base, this recipe turns humble ingredients into a comforting classic. Whether enjoyed as an appetizer, snack, or main course, these golden bites are guaranteed to win everyone over.

Ingredients

Dough

  • Chicken breasts: 3 pieces (about 900 g total)
  • Onion: 1
  • Fresh parsley: as needed
  • Green pepper: 1
  • Red pepper: 1
  • Garlic cloves: 3
  • Black pepper: to taste
  • Red pepper flakes: to taste
  • Cumin: to taste
  • Dried mint: to taste
  • Salt: to taste
  • Olive oil: 1 tablespoon

Filling

  • Potatoes: 4
  • Cheddar cheese: grated
  • Black pepper: to taste
  • Dried mint: to taste
  • Salt: to taste

Sauce

  • Tomato purée: 1 tablespoon
  • Water: 1 glass (about 200 ml)
  • Extra cheddar cheese: as desired

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the potatoes
Peel and slice the potatoes thinly. Boil until tender, then drain and set aside to cool completely.

Step 2: Prepare the seasoning mix
Chop the onion, peppers, garlic, and parsley. Combine them in a bowl with black pepper, red pepper flakes, cumin, dried mint, salt, and olive oil. Mix well.

Step 3: Season the chicken
Cut the chicken breasts into small cubes. Toss the pieces with the vegetable seasoning mix, ensuring they’re evenly coated. Cover and refrigerate for about 30 minutes to let the flavors develop.

Step 4: Make the filling
Mash the cooled potatoes until smooth. Add the grated cheddar cheese, along with black pepper, dried mint, and salt. Stir until everything is well combined.

Step 5: Form the balls
Lightly oil your hands. Take a spoonful of the potato mixture, form it into a ball, then flatten it slightly. Add a bit of the chicken mixture to the center and shape the potato around it to seal. Repeat until all the mixture is used.

Step 6: Mix the sauce
Whisk together the tomato purée and water in a small bowl until smooth.

Step 7: Bake
Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F). Place the prepared balls into a lightly greased baking dish and pour the tomato sauce evenly over them. Bake for around 40 minutes, until golden and crisp.

Step 8: Add the finishing touch
Sprinkle additional grated cheddar over the top and return to the oven for 10–15 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbling.

Step 9: Serve
Serve the potato-and-cheese balls hot, straight from the oven, with your favorite side or a fresh salad.
