“Whenever it was someone’s birthday, we knew we were in for a treat because our mother would whip out her well-used Better Homes and Gardens cookbook and make this”

Chocolate Satin Frosting
This luscious Chocolate Satin Frosting delivers a silky, decadent finish that elevates any dessert. Its rich flavor and signature sheen come from real unsweetened chocolate and a clever cooling method that transforms it into a smooth, spreadable masterpiece.
Ingredients
Ingredient | Quantity |
---|---|
Unsweetened baking chocolate | 3 1/2 ounces |
Powdered sugar | 3 cups |
Hot water | 4 1/2 tablespoons |
Large egg, room temp | 1 |
Unsalted butter, room temp | 1/2 cup |
Vanilla extract | 1 1/2 teaspoons |
Instructions
- Melt the Chocolate
In a microwave-safe bowl, gently melt the baking chocolate in 30-second intervals, stirring between each round, until smooth and fully melted. - Mix in Remaining Ingredients
To the warm chocolate, add powdered sugar and hot water. Beat in the egg, butter, and vanilla extract. Using an electric mixer, blend until the mixture is silky and well incorporated. At this stage, the frosting will appear thin. - Cool and Whip
Prepare an ice bath by filling a larger bowl with ice and a bit of cold water. Nest the bowl of frosting into the ice bath (taking care not to let water in). Whip the frosting with an electric mixer continuously while it’s chilling. After several minutes, it will thicken to a glossy, velvety texture perfect for spreading. - Use and Enjoy
Once the frosting reaches the desired consistency, remove it from the ice bath and frost your favorite cakes, cupcakes, or cookies. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator and re-whip gently if needed before reuse.
