Whenever my husband craves this dish, I happily make it, calling it ‘Hubby’s Bliss’

Welcome to the savory world of Old-Fashioned Swiss Steak, a dish that transcends time, offering a taste of nostalgia and home-cooked comfort. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the ingredients, detailed instructions, and personal insights to ensure your culinary journey is as delightful as the meal itself.

Ingredients:

INGREDIENTQUANTITY
Round steak1 1/2 lbs
SaltTo taste
Black pepperTo taste
All-purpose flour1/4 cup
Olive oil or vegetable oil2 tbsp
Onion, thinly sliced1 large
Garlic cloves, minced2
Diced tomatoes, with juice1 can (14.5 oz)
Worcestershire sauce1 tsp
Beef broth or water1/2 cup
Dried oregano1/2 tsp
Dried thyme1/2 tsp
Fresh parsley, chopped (optional)For garnish

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Your Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 325°F (165°C).
  2. Prepare the Steak: Trim excess fat from the round steak and cut it into serving-sized pieces. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
  3. Dredge in Flour: Place flour in a shallow dish. Dredge each steak piece in flour, shaking off the excess.
  4. Sear the Steak: Heat oil in a large ovenproof skillet or Dutch oven. Sear the steak until browned on both sides (about 3 minutes per side). Set aside.
  5. Cook Onions and Garlic: In the same skillet, cook sliced onions until soft (about 5 minutes). Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute, being careful not to burn it.
  6. Combine Ingredients: Return the steak to the skillet, pour diced tomatoes with juice, and add Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, oregano, and thyme. Stir to combine.
  7. Simmer and Cook: Bring the mixture to a simmer, then cover the skillet. Transfer to the preheated oven and cook for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until the steak is tender.
  8. Serve and Garnish: Once fork-tender, remove the skillet from the oven. Serve the Swiss steak hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired.
