Oven Baked Beef & Onion Foil Packet

This Oven-Baked Beef & Onion Foil Packet is a perfect “minimal effort, maximum flavor” dinner. Wrapping the steak with onions traps steam, allowing the onions to caramelize into a sweet, jammy topping while the beef remains tender and juicy. The key is the “onion bed” technique—keeping the steak off the foil so it braises in its own juices instead of simply roasting.

Oven-Baked Beef & Onion Foil Packet

Ingredients

  • Beef steak (sirloin, round, or chuck) – 1½–2 lbs
  • Large onions, thinly sliced – 2
  • Olive oil or melted butter – 3 tbsp
  • Salt – 1½ tsp
  • Black pepper – 1 tsp

Directions

Step 1: Prepare oven and foil
Preheat oven to 400°F. Cut four large sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil.

💡 Tip: If you only have standard foil, layer two sheets together. Heavy-duty foil prevents tearing and locks in all the steam and flavor.

Step 2: Season ingredients
Toss the onion slices with oil (or butter) and half of the salt and pepper. Pat the steak dry and season both sides with the remaining salt and pepper.

Step 3: Build the onion bed
Place a mound of the seasoned onions in the center of each foil sheet. Set a portion of steak on top.

💡 Tip: Drizzle any leftover oil or onion seasoning over the steak for extra flavor.

Step 4: Seal the packets
Fold the long edges of the foil over the steak and tightly roll the ends to form a sealed pouch.

Step 5: Bake
Arrange the foil packets on a baking sheet and bake for 20–25 minutes for medium doneness.

💡 Tip: For tougher cuts like round or chuck, bake the full 25 minutes (or slightly longer) to soften the meat.

Step 6: Rest and serve
Let the packets rest for 5 minutes before opening. This allows the juices to redistribute, keeping the steak moist when sliced.
