🍦 Easy Chocolate Ice Cream Shell Topping

There’s something so nostalgic and fun about that crackly chocolate coating on ice cream—this simple two-ingredient chocolate shell is exactly that! It’s rich, quick to make, and transforms any scoop into a treat your whole family will love.
Summer is the perfect time to bring out this homemade chocolate shell topping. What makes it magical? It starts off as a silky liquid and, when drizzled over cold ice cream, it firms up in seconds into a crisp, candy-like shell. It’s pure dessert magic—and incredibly easy.
This was a favorite of mine growing up, and I still can’t resist it. Honestly, while I was taking photos for this post, no one else was home, and I couldn’t bear to let it go to waste… so naturally, I had to eat it myself. (The sacrifices we make!)
Thankfully, my son was around when I made the second batch—he was just as impressed as I was back in the day!
🍫 Ingredients
- Chocolate chips or chopped chocolate – 1 cup
- Coconut oil – 2 tablespoons
🔥 How to Make It
- In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate and coconut oil.
- Heat in 30-second bursts, stirring between each, until completely melted and smooth.
- Let it cool slightly before using.
- Drizzle over your favorite ice cream and watch it harden like magic!
🥄 Tips & Tricks
- Store in a sealed container at room temperature.
- If the mixture firms up, just microwave it for 10 seconds to soften again.
- Works great over scoops, cones, or even sandwiched between cookies for DIY ice cream sandwiches.
