3-Ingredient Crispy Pan-Fried Halloumi

Halloumi is a unique, firm cheese famous for its signature “squeak” and its ability to hold its shape when heated. Because it doesn’t melt like most cheeses, it’s perfect for pan-frying, developing a crisp, salty exterior while remaining soft inside.

3-Ingredient Pan-Fried Halloumi

Ingredients

IngredientAmount
Halloumi cheese, sliced ½ inch thick8 oz (225 g)
Olive oil or butter1 tbsp
Dried oregano or fresh thyme (optional)½ tsp

Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Halloumi
Remove the cheese from the package and slice it into ½-inch thick pieces. Pat each slice dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This step helps create a deeper golden crust and minimizes splattering during cooking.

Step 2: Warm the Pan
Heat the olive oil or butter in a nonstick skillet over medium heat until the fat is hot and shimmering.

Step 3: Fry the Cheese
Arrange the halloumi slices in a single layer in the pan. Cook without moving them for 2–3 minutes to allow a crisp crust to form. Once the bottom is golden brown, turn the slices over.

Step 4: Season (Optional)
If using herbs, sprinkle them over the cheese immediately after flipping so they lightly toast in the pan. Cook the second side for another 2–3 minutes until crisp.

Step 5: Serve Immediately
Transfer the halloumi to a plate and serve right away while warm and tender. Enjoy on its own with a squeeze of lemon, or add to a Mediterranean-inspired salad for extra savory flavor.
