Crispy Battered Mushrooms

These Crispy Fried Mushrooms deliver that irresistible, restaurant-style crunch right at home. A classic three-step breading process—flour, egg wash, and seasoned crumbs—creates a crisp, golden coating that seals in the mushrooms’ juicy, earthy flavor. Whether you use button or cremini mushrooms, the blend of garlic, onion, and paprika ensures every bite is savory and satisfying.
Crispy Fried Mushrooms
Ingredients
The Main
- 1 lb fresh mushrooms (button or cremini)
Breading Stations
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup milk
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (plain or panko)
Seasonings
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp dried oregano (optional)
For Frying
- ¾ cup vegetable oil
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Mushrooms
Wipe mushrooms clean with a damp paper towel or rinse briefly under water, then dry thoroughly so the coating adheres properly. Trim the stem ends. Leave small mushrooms whole or cut larger ones in half for even cooking.
Step 2: Set Up the Breading Line
Place three shallow bowls side by side:
- Bowl 1: flour
- Bowl 2: whisked eggs and milk
- Bowl 3: breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, pepper, and oregano
Step 3: Bread the Mushrooms
Using one hand for dry ingredients and one for wet, coat each mushroom in flour, shaking off excess. Dip into the egg wash, then roll in the seasoned breadcrumbs, pressing lightly to help the coating stick.
Step 4: Fry Until Golden
Heat the oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C). Fry mushrooms in batches, turning occasionally, for 3–4 minutes or until evenly golden and crispy. Avoid overcrowding the pan.
Step 5: Drain and Serve
Remove the mushrooms with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel–lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve immediately while hot and crunchy.
