Sharp cheddar cheese6 cups (about 1½ lbs)Shredded and separated

Instructions

Step 1: Heat the Oven

Set the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly coat a 9×13-inch baking dish with grease or nonstick spray.

Step 2: Layer the Pasta and Cheese

Add the dry macaroni evenly into the casserole dish. Scatter 4 cups of the shredded cheddar cheese over the pasta.

Step 3: Add the Milk

Carefully pour the milk over the macaroni and cheese mixture, making sure everything is evenly covered. Press down lightly with a spoon so the pasta absorbs some of the liquid.

Step 4: Stir Gently

Mix the ingredients lightly, just enough to distribute them evenly without disturbing the layers too much.

Step 5: Bake Covered

Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for about 45 minutes, or until the pasta is soft and the mixture is hot and bubbling.

Step 6: Top with More Cheese

Take the dish out of the oven and remove the foil. Stir gently, level the surface, and sprinkle the remaining 2 cups of cheddar cheese across the top.

Step 7: Finish Baking

Place the dish back into the oven uncovered and bake for another 20 to 25 minutes, until the cheese is fully melted with a lightly golden, crispy edge.

Step 8: Cool Slightly Before Serving

Allow the macaroni and cheese to rest for around 10 minutes before serving so the sauce can thicken slightly.

Optional Extras

  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • A little butter for added richness
  • Crumbled cooked bacon
  • Paprika for extra flavor
  • Breadcrumbs for a crunchy topping

Serve hot as a hearty main course or pair it with fried chicken, baked ham, meatloaf, or roasted vegetables.
