Sleeping soundly through the entire night can feel like a luxury, yet consistent, quality rest is essential for feeling energized and performing well during the day.

Many people believe that going to bed at the “correct” hour ensures uninterrupted sleep. In reality, waking up between 3:00 AM and 5:00 AM happens quite often, and drifting back to sleep isn’t always easy. This pattern isn’t purely accidental—it may have deeper explanations.

The Hour of the Wolf

The time window from 3:00 AM to 5:00 AM is commonly known as the “hour of the wolf,” a term brought into popular culture by Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman through his psychological horror movie of the same name.

Bergman described it as a moment between night and dawn when sleep is at its deepest and dreams can be most intense. It is also a time when people who are awake may feel overwhelmed by fear or troubling thoughts. He even noted that it is a period when many births occur.

According to Professor Birgitta Steene, the phrase has roots in Swedish folklore, where this stretch of time is believed to have an unusually high number of both births and deaths.

From a biological standpoint, this is when the body is in its deepest stage of rest, which can make it more vulnerable to disruptions.

A Moment of Calm—or Discomfort

In traditional beliefs, this time has also been called the witching hour or devil’s hour, thought to be when supernatural forces are most active.

For those who remain asleep, this phase represents the body’s most restorative period. However, for individuals who wake up during these hours, it can often be linked to increased anxiety or a sense of unease.

The body operates on a circadian rhythm aligned with the day–night cycle. During the night, functions such as body temperature, blood pressure, and metabolism slow down. Around 4:00 AM, these processes reach their lowest point, marking the peak of physical restoration. For people prone to anxiety, this low state may intensify restless feelings and lead to waking.

Whether explained by folklore, science, or something less tangible, waking between 3:00 AM and 5:00 AM may hold more meaning than it appears at first glance.
