Taco Pizza

Taco Pizza
Taco Pizza brings together the bold flavors of tacos with the comfort of homemade pizza for a fun and satisfying meal. A soft, homemade yeast crust is layered with a savory refried bean and salsa spread instead of traditional pizza sauce, then topped with seasoned taco meat and plenty of melted cheese. Once baked, it’s finished with crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, black olives, and green onions for a fresh, flavorful bite. It’s a perfect choice for weeknight dinners, parties, or game-day gatherings.
Ingredients
For the Dough
- 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 cup warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
- 2½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
For the Sauce
- 1 cup refried beans
- ½ cup salsa
For the Toppings
- 1 pound ground beef, ground turkey, or your favorite meat-free substitute
- 3 tablespoons taco seasoning
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese or Mexican-style cheese blend
- 1 cup chopped tomatoes
- ½ cup sliced black olives
- ½ cup chopped green onions
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- Jalapeños, sour cream, or sliced avocado for serving (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Proof the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
Step 2: Prepare the Dough
Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl. Add the activated yeast mixture and olive oil, stirring until a soft dough comes together.
Step 3: Knead and Rise
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Step 4: Cook the Taco Filling
While the dough is rising, cook the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess grease, then stir in the taco seasoning along with the recommended amount of water. Simmer for several minutes before removing from the heat.
Step 5: Heat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
Step 6: Form the Crust
Punch down the risen dough and roll it into a circle or rectangle to fit your pizza pan or baking tray. Transfer the dough and gently press it into shape.
Step 7: Spread the Sauce
Stir together the refried beans and salsa until smooth. Spread the mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
Step 8: Layer the Toppings
Scatter the seasoned taco meat evenly over the sauce, then cover with the shredded cheese.
Step 9: Bake the Pizza
Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is fully melted and lightly browned.
Step 10: Add Fresh Toppings
Let the pizza cool for a few minutes before topping it with shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, sliced black olives, and green onions. Garnish with jalapeños, sour cream, or avocado if desired. Slice and serve immediately.
Serving Suggestion
For the freshest flavor and best texture, wait until just before serving to add the lettuce and other fresh toppings. The contrast between the warm, cheesy pizza and the cool, crisp vegetables is what makes Taco Pizza so delicious.
