Overnight Orange Roll Casserole

Overnight Orange Roll Casserole

This Overnight Orange Roll Casserole is an easy way to turn refrigerated orange rolls into an impressive brunch dish that tastes homemade. The rolls are cut into pieces and covered with a creamy, citrus-infused custard, creating a French-toast-style bake with bright orange flavor. Letting the casserole rest overnight gives the dough time to absorb the custard, resulting in a soft, rich center while the surface bakes up golden and lightly crisp.

Ingredients

Casserole Base

IngredientAmount
Refrigerated orange rolls2 cans, cut into quarters
Butter, melted1/4 cup
Eggs4
Heavy whipping cream1/3 cup
Light brown sugar1/3 cup
Vanilla extract1 teaspoon
Orange, zest and juice1 medium orange

Zesty Icing

IngredientAmount
Powdered sugar2 cups
Orange juice3–4 tablespoons
Butter, melted2 tablespoons
Orange zest1 tablespoon
Vanilla extract1 teaspoon

Directions

Step 1: Prepare the baking dish
If you plan to bake the casserole right away, preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Pour the melted butter into a 9×13-inch baking dish and gently tilt the dish so the bottom is evenly coated.

Step 2: Cut the orange rolls
Separate the refrigerated orange rolls and cut each one into four equal pieces. Place the pieces throughout the prepared baking dish.

Tip: Leave a little space between the pieces instead of arranging them tightly. This allows the custard to spread around and soak into the dough more effectively.

Step 3: Mix the orange custard
In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy whipping cream, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and the zest and juice from the orange. Slowly pour the mixture over the cut rolls, distributing it as evenly as possible.

Step 4: Refrigerate overnight
Cover the baking dish securely with foil and place it in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or, ideally, overnight. The resting time allows the rolls to absorb the custard and creates a richer, more cohesive texture after baking.

Step 5: Bake the casserole
Remove the foil and place the casserole in the preheated oven. Bake for 30–35 minutes, until the rolls are nicely puffed and golden on top. The middle should remain slightly soft and have a little give when gently pressed. Allow the casserole to cool for approximately 10 minutes.

Step 6: Make the orange icing
Combine the powdered sugar, melted butter, orange zest, and vanilla extract in a bowl. Add the orange juice gradually, one tablespoon at a time, whisking until the icing reaches your preferred consistency.

Drizzle the orange icing generously over the warm casserole before serving.
