Southern Fried Salmon Patties
Ingredients
- 1 can salmon, 14.75 ounces, drained and bones removed if desired
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, optional
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped, optional
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Directions
1. Prepare the salmon
Drain the canned salmon well.
Place it in a large mixing bowl and flake it apart with a fork.
2. Make the patty mixture
Add the beaten egg, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce if using, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, and parsley.
Mix until everything is evenly combined.
3. Shape the patties
Using your hands or a spoon, form the salmon mixture into patties about 2 to 3 inches wide and roughly 1/2 inch thick.
Press them gently so they hold together.
4. Fry until golden
Pour about 1/4 inch of vegetable oil into a large skillet and heat over medium heat.
Carefully add the patties in batches, leaving enough space between them so they fry evenly.
Cook for about 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until crisp and golden brown.
Transfer the cooked patties to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
5. Serve
Serve the salmon patties warm with lemon wedges, tartar sauce, remoulade, or your favorite dipping sauce.
Tips and Variations
Add some heat:
Mix in a pinch of cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes.
Try a different breadcrumb:
Panko breadcrumbs can give the patties an extra-crispy texture.
Bake instead of fry:
For a lighter version, bake the patties at 400°F (200°C) for 15 to 20 minutes, turning once if needed, until golden and cooked through.
Change up the toppings:
Serve with avocado, salsa, Greek yogurt, or a simple herb sauce.
Crispy, savory, and easy to prepare, these classic salmon patties are a simple comfort-food favorite.
