Slow Cooker Sausage and Onions
Ingredients
- 2 pounds smoked sausage links, sliced into 1-inch rounds
- 3 large yellow onions, halved and thinly sliced
- 1 cup low-sodium beef broth
- 1 packet dry onion soup mix, about 1 ounce
Optional for a Thicker Gravy
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons cold water
Directions
1. Add the onions
Place the sliced onions evenly across the bottom of a 5- to 6-quart slow cooker.
2. Add the broth and seasoning
Pour the beef broth over the onions.
Sprinkle the dry onion soup mix on top and stir briefly to combine.
3. Add the sausage
Arrange the sliced sausage over the onion mixture.
Press the pieces down gently so they are mostly surrounded by the liquid.
4. Slow cook
Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 7 hours.
For the best texture, use the low setting rather than high.
As the dish cooks, the onions will become very soft and blend into the broth, creating a rich, savory sauce.
5. Thicken the gravy if desired
For a thicker gravy, whisk together the cornstarch and cold water until smooth.
Stir the mixture into the slow cooker during the final 30 minutes of cooking.
Switch the slow cooker to HIGH and cook uncovered until the sauce thickens.
6. Serve
Gently stir the sausage and onions before serving.
Spoon the sausage and plenty of onion gravy over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.
Simple, hearty, and full of flavor, this slow-cooker dinner turns a few everyday ingredients into an easy comfort-food meal.
