The Symbolism Carried by Gold Star License Plates

That same year, the gold star gained official recognition. President Woodrow Wilson approved the use of black armbands with gold stars for mothers who had lost sons in combat. This act acknowledged their sacrifice and helped establish the gold star as a lasting emblem of military loss.

Their collective efforts led to the creation of American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. in 1928, an organization that continues to support grieving families, advocate for veterans, and build a sense of community among those who carry this loss.

In 1936, the United States Congress designated the last Sunday of September as Gold Star Mother’s Day, intended to honor mothers who lost children in military service. The observance later expanded to include all Gold Star families, recognizing spouses, siblings, and children who bear this profound loss.

Today, many states offer gold star license plates to eligible family members. These plates accompany people through everyday life—on commutes, errands, and quiet drives—serving as constant reminders of sacrifice and love.
