A little cafe in my town has this on their menu and it’s always been a favorite of mine!

Classic Bread & Butter Pudding

This Classic Bread & Butter Pudding takes everyday ingredients and turns them into a warm, nostalgic dessert. With buttery layers of bread, juicy raisins, a hint of cinnamon, and a rich, silky custard, this pudding bakes into a golden, comforting delight. It’s a simple treat that brings a sense of home to any meal.

Ingredients:

IngredientAmount
Bread slices8 slices
Raisins1/3 cup
Ground cinnamon2 teaspoons
Milk2½ cups
Whipped cream¼ cup
Eggs4
Granulated sugar½ cup (plus extra for topping)
Melted butter2 teaspoons

Instructions:

1. Preheat and Prep

Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease an 8×8-inch baking dish (or one of similar size) with butter or cooking spray.

2. Prepare the Bread

Trim the crusts from the bread slices if you prefer a softer texture. Spread the melted butter over one side of each slice.

3. Assemble the Base Layer

Arrange half of the buttered slices, butter-side up, in a single layer in the bottom of your baking dish. Sprinkle the raisins evenly over the bread, followed by the ground cinnamon.

4. Add the Top Layer

Place the remaining bread slices, buttered side up, over the raisin layer. Press down gently to help the layers settle together.

5. Make the Custard Mixture

In a separate bowl, whisk the milk, whipped cream, eggs, and granulated sugar together until smooth and well combined.

6. Pour and Soak

Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread layers, making sure everything is well coated. Allow the dish to sit for 5–10 minutes so the bread can absorb the custard.

7. Bake the Pudding

Place the dish in the oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the top is golden and the custard is just set in the center. Optionally, sprinkle a bit more sugar over the top halfway through baking for a crisp, caramelized finish.

8. Cool Slightly and Serve

Let the pudding rest for a few minutes after baking to firm up. Serve it warm on its own, or enjoy it with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar.
