I grew up on these, and I’m not sure why they aren’t more popular. This recipe is delicious and really easy to follow, especially for beginners.

Classic Yorkshire Pudding

When it comes to traditional British comfort food, Yorkshire pudding stands proudly at the top. Typically served with roast meats and a generous helping of gravy, this timeless favorite has graced British tables for generations. Follow this simple guide to create puddings that are crisp and golden on the outside yet light and tender inside. Whether you’re a seasoned cook or a beginner, these steps will help you master them every time.

Ingredients and Equipment

Before you begin, make sure you have everything ready.

Ingredients
QuantityIngredient
1 cupAll-purpose flour
1 cupMilk
3 largeEggs
1/2 teaspoonSalt
As neededVegetable oil or beef drippings
Equipment
  • 12-cup muffin tin
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Warm the Tin
Set your oven to 425°F (220°C). Place the muffin tin inside the oven to preheat.
  2. Prepare the Batter
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, milk, eggs, and salt until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps.
  3. Heat the Oil
Carefully take the hot muffin tin out of the oven. Add a small amount of vegetable oil or beef drippings—about 1/4 inch deep—to each cup. Return the tin to the oven for around 5 minutes, until the oil is sizzling.
  4. Add Batter and Bake
Pour the batter evenly into the hot muffin cups, filling each one about halfway. The hot oil helps them puff up beautifully. Bake for 20–25 minutes, until they’re well-risen and golden brown.
  5. Avoid Opening the Oven
Do not open the oven door while baking—this will help keep the Yorkshire puddings tall and airy.
  6. Serve Fresh and Hot
Remove from the oven and serve immediately while still crisp and puffy. Yorkshire puddings make the perfect side for a roast dinner or can even be enjoyed on their own.
