Old-Fashioned Custard Pie

If you’re craving a dessert that’s simple yet timeless, this classic custard pie fits the bill. With its creamy texture, subtle vanilla flavor, and flaky crust, it offers a comforting taste of tradition. Ideal for holidays, family dinners, or a quiet moment of indulgence, this pie proves that the classics never go out of style.

Ingredients

For the Crust

  • 1 pre-made pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
  • Optional: 1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)

For the Custard Filling

  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 cups whole milk (or substitute half-and-half for a richer taste)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional, for added depth)

Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat the Oven
Set your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place your pie crust into a 9-inch pie plate, gently pressing it into place. Trim any overhang. If you’d like a golden finish, brush the crust with the optional egg wash.

2️⃣ Mix the Custard
In a large bowl, beat the eggs with sugar, vanilla, and salt until smooth. Slowly whisk in the milk until fully incorporated.

In a separate small bowl, combine the flour and nutmeg (if using), then gradually stir this into the custard to avoid clumps.

3️⃣ Fill the Pie Shell
Carefully pour the custard mixture into the prepared pie crust, spreading it evenly.

4️⃣ Bake the Pie
Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the edges are golden and the center has set. To test, insert a knife near the center—if it comes out clean, your pie is done.

5️⃣ Cool and Enjoy
Let the pie cool completely on a wire rack. Slice and serve at room temperature or chilled. For a little extra flair, dust with powdered sugar or top with whipped cream.
