Homemade Cheddar Biscuits
Soft, fluffy, and packed with cheesy goodness, these homemade cheddar biscuits are a delicious side for almost any meal. They have a tender interior with lightly crisp, golden edges thanks to cold butter worked into the dough. Freshly shredded sharp cheddar delivers bold, savory flavor, while a buttery garlic-herb glaze brushed on after baking gives them a restaurant-style finish.
Cheddar Biscuits Recipe
Ingredients
| Ingredient | Amount |
|---|---|
| All-purpose flour | 2 cups |
| Baking powder | 1 tablespoon |
| Fine salt | ½ teaspoon |
| Garlic powder | ½ teaspoon |
| Unsalted butter, chilled and cut into cubes | ½ cup (1 stick) |
| Sharp cheddar cheese, freshly grated | 1 cup |
| Whole milk or buttermilk | ¾ cup |
| Unsalted butter, melted (for topping) | 2 tablespoons |
| Garlic, minced or pressed | 1 clove |
| Dried parsley or finely chopped fresh chives | ½ teaspoon |
Instructions
Step 1: Heat the Oven
Set the oven to 425°F (220°C). Place the oven rack in the center position and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and garlic powder until evenly combined.
Step 3: Incorporate the Butter
Add the chilled butter cubes to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter, two forks, or your fingertips, blend the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with small pieces of butter still visible.
Baking Tip: Leave tiny bits of butter intact and avoid overworking the mixture. These pockets of butter help create tender, flaky layers.
Step 4: Prepare the Dough
Stir in the shredded cheddar until evenly distributed. Pour in the milk or buttermilk and gently mix just until the dough comes together. It should appear slightly shaggy and uneven. Stop stirring once all the flour has been incorporated.
Step 5: Portion and Bake
Using a large spoon or a ¼-cup scoop, divide the dough into 8 equal portions and place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch of space between each.
Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the biscuits are well-risen and lightly golden on the tops and bottoms.
Step 6: Finish with Garlic Butter
While the biscuits are baking, stir together the melted butter, garlic, and parsley or chives in a small bowl.
As soon as the biscuits are removed from the oven, brush the tops generously with the warm garlic-herb butter.
Serve immediately while still warm for the best texture and gooey cheddar flavor.
Serving Ideas
These cheesy biscuits are a perfect companion to soups, hearty stews, chili, roasted chicken, beef, or barbecue. They’re also delicious served warm on their own as a satisfying savory treat.
