Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy
Ingredients
For the Salisbury Steaks
- 1 pound ground beef, preferably 80–85% lean
- 1/3 cup plain breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
For the Mushroom Gravy
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
- 1/2 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Directions
1. Prepare the beef patties
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
Mix gently until just combined.
Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties.
2. Brown the patties
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the patties and cook for about 4 to 5 minutes per side, or until nicely browned and mostly cooked through.
Transfer them to a plate and set aside.
3. Cook the mushrooms and onions
In the same skillet, melt the butter.
Add the sliced mushrooms and chopped onion.
Cook for about 5 to 6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly browned.
Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
4. Make the gravy
Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom mixture.
Stir well and cook for about 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring or whisking continuously.
Add the Worcestershire sauce and dried thyme.
Bring the gravy to a gentle simmer.
5. Finish cooking the Salisbury steaks
Return the browned patties to the skillet.
Spoon some of the mushroom gravy over the top.
Cover and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the patties are fully cooked and the gravy has thickened.
Taste and adjust with additional salt and black pepper if needed.
6. Serve
Serve the Salisbury steaks hot with plenty of mushroom gravy spooned over the top.
Mashed potatoes, egg noodles, rice, or roasted vegetables all make excellent sides.
Rich, hearty, and full of old-fashioned flavor, this Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy is an easy comfort-food dinner that feels like a home-cooked classic.
