📝 Ingredients
| Ingredient | Amount |
|---|---|
| Unsalted butter | 1 cup (225 g) |
| Brown sugar, packed | 1 cup (200 g) |
| Semi-sweet chocolate chips | 2 cups (340 g) |
| Vanilla extract (optional) | ½ teaspoon |
| Salt (optional) | Pinch |
| Chopped pecans or almonds (optional) | ½ cup |
| Saltine crackers | Enough to cover baking sheet |
🔪 Instructions
1. Prepare the Baking Sheet
Line a rimmed baking sheet or jelly-roll pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single, even layer, covering the bottom completely.
2. Make the Caramel
Place the butter and brown sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir continuously until the mixture comes to a boil. Continue cooking for 3–4 minutes while stirring constantly. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract if desired.
3. Bake
Carefully pour the hot caramel over the crackers and spread it into an even layer. Transfer the pan to a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven and bake for 5–7 minutes, until the caramel is bubbling across the surface.
4. Add the Chocolate
Remove the pan from the oven and immediately scatter the chocolate chips over the hot caramel. Allow them to sit for 2–3 minutes to soften, then spread the melted chocolate into a smooth, even layer.
5. Add Toppings
If using, sprinkle the chopped nuts over the chocolate. A light sprinkle of salt can also be added for extra sweet-and-salty flavor.
6. Chill and Serve
Place the pan in the refrigerator for 1–2 hours, or until completely firm. Once set, break the toffee into rustic bite-sized pieces and serve.
Tip: Store the toffee in an airtight container in the refrigerator to keep it crisp and fresh for several days.
