Southern 4-Ingredient Butter Dip Biscuits

These Butter Dip Biscuits are a simple way to get that classic flaky texture without a lot of extra work. The secret is the “butter bath,” where the dough bakes directly in melted butter. Using cold butter and milk creates a crumbly dough that releases steam quickly in a hot 450°F oven, helping the biscuits rise while forming a crisp, golden bottom that almost tastes lightly fried.

Southern 4-Ingredient Butter Dip Biscuits

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter (cold, divided)
  • 3/4 cup cold milk or buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt

💡 Why “4 ingredients”?
In many Southern kitchens, baking powder and salt are considered pantry basics. The core ingredients are flour, butter, and milk—plus butter for the pan—hence the name. Some versions even use self-rising flour to simplify things further.

Instructions

Step 1: Melt the butter
Preheat your oven to 450°F. Place 1/4 cup of the butter into a 9×13-inch baking dish and let it melt in the oven as it heats.

Tip:
Keep an eye on it—you’re aiming for melted and slightly bubbling, not browned.

Step 2: Make the dough
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the remaining 1/2 cup of cold butter using a fork or pastry cutter until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Add the cold milk and stir just until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.

Tip:
Avoid overmixing. A few dry spots are okay—overworking the dough can make the biscuits heavy.

Step 3: Dip in butter
Take the hot dish out of the oven. Drop spoonfuls of dough into the melted butter.

Tip:
Turn each piece once to coat all sides—this helps create that crisp, golden exterior.

Step 4: Bake
Bake for 12–15 minutes, until the tops are deeply golden. As they cook, the biscuits bake right in the butter, giving them a tender interior and crispy edges.

Step 5: Serve warm
Remove from the oven and serve immediately.

Tip:
These are best enjoyed within about 10 minutes, when the edges are at their crispiest.

Rich, buttery, and perfectly textured, these biscuits prove that a simple method can deliver big flavor with very little effort.
