Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients

For the Ground Beef Gravy

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon thyme, optional
  • 1 cup frozen peas and carrots, optional

For the Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Directions

1. Cook the potatoes

Place the peeled and quartered potatoes in a large pot and cover them with water.

Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat slightly and cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender.

2. Mash the potatoes

Drain the potatoes well and return them to the pot.

Add the milk and butter.

Mash until smooth and creamy, then season with salt and black pepper to taste.

Cover and keep warm while you prepare the beef gravy.

3. Brown the ground beef

Place the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat.

Cook for about 7 to 10 minutes, breaking the meat apart with a spatula as it browns.

Drain excess grease if needed.

4. Add the onion and garlic

Stir the diced onion and minced garlic into the cooked beef.

Continue cooking for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the onion becomes soft and translucent.

5. Add the flour

Sprinkle the flour evenly over the beef mixture.

Stir continuously for about 2 to 3 minutes so the flour cooks and coats the meat.

This will help thicken the gravy.

6. Make the gravy

Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring to keep the gravy smooth.

Add the Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and thyme if using.

Stir until everything is well combined.

7. Simmer until thickened

Reduce the heat and let the gravy simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens.

If using frozen peas and carrots, stir them in during the final few minutes and cook until heated through.

8. Serve

Spoon a generous portion of mashed potatoes onto each plate.

Top with the hot ground beef gravy and serve immediately.

Rich, savory, and satisfying, this classic comfort-food dinner is perfect when you want something warm, filling, and easy to make.
