My aunt clipped this from a 1967 magazine and made it for every church potluck until the day she passed. Only 4 ingredients and it never once came hom

This Oven-Baked 4-Ingredient Chicken Royale offers a simple take on a comforting, smothered chicken dish with a slightly more refined touch. Layering crispy fried onions both beneath and on top adds a mix of soft, savory depth and a crisp, golden finish. The golden mushroom soup brings a richer, more robust flavor than standard versions, making it an easy way to create a more satisfying meal with minimal ingredients.

Oven-Baked 4-Ingredient Chicken Royale

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs chicken breasts, trimmed
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) golden mushroom soup
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 can (6 oz) crispy fried onions, divided

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Oven and Chicken
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Trim the chicken breasts, and if they are thick, slice them horizontally for more even cooking.

Step 2: Create the Base Layer
Place the chicken in the prepared dish and scatter half of the crispy fried onions evenly over the top.

Step 3: Mix the Sauce
Combine the golden mushroom soup and sour cream in a bowl, stirring until smooth. Spread the mixture evenly over the chicken to fully coat it.

Step 4: Bake Covered
Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 30 minutes to keep the chicken tender and juicy.

Step 5: Add the Final Topping
Remove the foil, sprinkle the remaining fried onions over the top, and return the dish to the oven. Bake uncovered for an additional 15–20 minutes, until the top is golden and the sauce is bubbling.

Step 6: Rest and Serve
Allow the dish to rest for 5–10 minutes before serving so the sauce thickens slightly and coats the chicken well.
