Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers

Oklahoma-Style Fried Onion Burgers 🍔🧅
These classic fried onion burgers are packed with savory flavor and crispy edges. Thinly sliced onions are pressed directly into the beef as it cooks, creating a deliciously caramelized crust. They’re quick to prepare and perfect for a casual dinner or cookout.
Ingredients — Makes 4 Burgers
- 1 pound ground beef, preferably 80/20
- 1 large onion, sliced very thin
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 4 hamburger buns, toasted
- Optional toppings: cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup, mustard, or mayonnaise
Instructions
- Prepare the onions: Slice the onion into very thin rings or half-moons, then separate the pieces and set aside.
- Form the beef: Divide the ground beef into four loose portions and shape each into a patty slightly wider than the hamburger buns. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
- Cook the onions and burgers: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat and lightly grease it. Place one-quarter of the sliced onions onto the hot surface. Set a beef patty directly over the onions and press down firmly with a spatula.
- Brown and flip: Cook for about 3–4 minutes, until the onions are golden and crisp and the beef develops a browned crust. Carefully flip the burger and cook for another 3–4 minutes, or until the beef reaches 160°F internally.
- Add cheese: If using cheese, place a slice on each burger during the final minute of cooking. Cover the skillet briefly to help it melt.
- Build the burgers: Place the cooked patties on toasted buns and add your favorite toppings. Finish with the top bun and serve immediately.
Helpful Tips
- Use freshly sliced onions and good-quality ground beef for the best flavor.
- Press the patties firmly into the onions so they adhere and become nicely crisp.
- Add bacon, jalapeños, or barbecue sauce for a different twist.
- Refrigerate leftover cooked patties for up to 2 days and reheat gently in a skillet.
