Step 3: Press into the Pan
Line a 9×13-inch baking dish with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal. Press the chocolate mixture firmly into an even layer across the bottom of the pan.
Step 4: Prepare the Caramel
Place 1 cup of sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir continuously as it melts and turns into a smooth amber-colored caramel.
Kitchen Tip: Once sugar reaches a deep amber color, it can burn quickly, so keep a close eye on it.
Step 5: Add the Butter
Carefully whisk the cubed butter into the hot caramel. Continue stirring until completely melted and smooth.
Step 6: Finish the Caramel Sauce
Slowly pour in the heavy cream while whisking constantly. The mixture will bubble vigorously. Once smooth, stir in the sea salt and remove from the heat.
Step 7: Layer the Caramel
Immediately pour the caramel over the prepared base and spread evenly. Let it cool for 10–15 minutes.
Step 8: Melt the Chocolate
Place the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 20–30 second intervals, stirring between each, until fully melted and smooth.
Step 9: Add the Topping
Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the caramel layer. Sprinkle with chopped nuts if desired, then finish with a light dusting of sea salt.
Step 10: Chill Until Firm
Refrigerate the pan for at least 1 hour, allowing the chocolate and caramel layers to set completely.
Step 11: Slice and Serve
Using the parchment overhang, lift the dessert from the pan and transfer it to a cutting board. Slice into squares or bars and serve chilled.
